Man Struck, Killed While Helping Box Truck Back Up In Suffolk County Parking Lot

A 45-year-old man was killed on Long Island after being pinned against a vehicle parked in a crowded parking lot while he was helping a driver move a box truck, police said.

Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian in Central Islip at approximately 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Police said that Ronkonkoma resident Rolando Padillacanales was helping Brentwood resident Francisco Ramos, age 46, back up a 2007 box truck in the parking lot of 301 South Research Place when the truck struck Padillacanales and pinned him against a parked 2006 Freightliner box truck.

Ramos instead moved the vehicle forward and Padillacanales was struck, falling to the ground.

According to investigators, Padillacanales was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Ramos was uninjured.

Police said that a safety check was performed on the trucks by Motor Carrier Safety Section officers at the scene.

No foul play is suspected and no charges have been announced.
